Orthodontics for Children: Guiding Their Smile Journey from the Start

We know you want the very best for your child, and when it comes to their oral health, we’re here to be your supportive partner. Starting early is all about getting ahead and setting them up for a healthy, confident future.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child receive their first orthodontic evaluation by seven years old. By then, your child's teeth have developed enough to where subtle problems can be spotted with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.

This check-up is quick and easy! It may reveal that your child's bite is fine and braces for kids aren't necessary. Or, Dr. Kaplan may identify a developing problem but recommend monitoring your child's growth and development. Then if indicated, your child will begin treatment at the appropriate time.

Here’s why that early look is so helpful:

  • Prevent or stop teeth from being impacted
  • Maintain space for growing teeth
  • Prevent gum issues from improperly erupting teeth

What is Early (Phase I) Treatment?

In some cases, Dr. Kaplan might find a problem that can benefit from Phase I treatment. This initial step may prevent more serious problems from developing later and can make any treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases, Dr. Kaplan will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.

This gives Dr. Kaplan the best chance to:

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits (like thumb-sucking)
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem in your child
  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
  • Create a more pleasing arrangement of teeth, lips, and face

It's not always easy to tell when your child may need attention. Even teeth that look straight may be hiding a problem bite! If you notice any of these clues, it’s a good idea to schedule your free in-office exam:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Thumb-sucking
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
  • Jaws that are too far forward or back
  • Protruding teeth
  • An unbalanced facial appearance

Everyone in Dr. Kaplan's office is so kind and cheerful. It's obvious they enjoy their work in taking care of patients. I love going there and trust him and all of his staff. It is always a positiveexperience. Thanks, All!

Simply the best experience you can have, given its orthodontics lol. The reception is so on the ball - they went above and beyond to fit my schedule. The office is pristine and comforting. The hygienists are happy and kind. And Dr. Kaplan is just wonderful…he put me at ease, triple checked everything with me, took the right amount of time. Could not ask for more.

Dr. Kaplan and his team have been amazing. I started treatment yesterday and came into the office extremely nervous. Him and his team made me feel comfortable. We even joked about me falling asleep while getting my appliance installed. 🤭

While the age that kids get braces may vary, orthodontic treatments most often begin between the ages of 9 and 14, and some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are treated early. If it appears that your child needs treatment, Dr. Kaplan can advise you as to the ideal time to begin. We’re in this together!
